2018 Petit Verdot
Originating from France in a region beginning with B and ending in x (which, due to labelling laws we are not allowed to name!) Petit Verdot is a late ripening variety that suits Australia’s dry, sunny climate perfectly. Although it has long been used as a blending component, it is increasingly being given the chance show its true colours as a varietal wine.
We source our Petit Verdot from the Hilltops region of NSW. The vineyard is warm enough to allow the variety to ripen, yet cool enough to maintain the intense yet delicate aromas of this beautiful variety.
In 2018 the Petit Verdot grapes were crushed to stainless steel vats. The must was then pumped over the fruit four times a day to maximise colour extraction. After 6 days on skins the wine was pressed off with 50% matured in two and three year old barriques. Each barrel is carefully assessed before inclusion in the final blend.
The beauty of this wine is in the perfumed lift of spice and violets overlaying the subtle tobacco characters on the palate. Oak maturation has imparted a little extra complexity and structure making the palate supple with fine lingering tannins.
