2023 Lyre Lyre (Doz)
RRP $25.00 | Sale $12.50 per bottle
(Dozen) About the label: In the early 1800’s, a lyrebird specimen was prepared for display by a British Museum taxidermist who had never seen a live lyrebird. He mistakenly arranged the feathers in a similar way to that of a peacock but in the shape of a lyre. The result was a series of beautiful but inaccurate lyrebird portraits.
These remarkable and slightly comical birds are one of our favourite local inhabitants. We spend a lot of time in the hills around the Hunter Valley and when we see a lyrebird scoot across our path it makes for a special day.
VITICULTURE
The grapes for this wine are sourced from two vineyards in the Hunter Valley. The Verdelho, Pecorino and Albariño are grown in the Harrowby vineyard in the Broke Fordwich sub region, about 5ks from the winery. The Vermentino is from the historic Roxburgh vineyard in the Upper Hunter Valley.
WINEMAKING NOTES
The early ripening varieties like Verdelho and Albariño are harvested at lower sugar levels which gives the blend a good acid structure. The Pecorino and Vermentino are picked later and give the fuller tropical flavours that make this wine so delicious. The wine is fermented predominantly in stainless steel with a tiny portion (around 10%) fermented in older French oak.
TASTING NOTES
Blending Verdelho, Pecorino, Vermentino and Albariño has resulted in a wine that is a delicious fruit salad. It captures the flavours of lychees, lime and melon while maintaining a beautiful line of citrus flavour to the finish. Perfectly matched with Thai food or any dish with a bit of spice.
